Neurodiversity event, Freespace Gallery – 31 January 2019

An Inclusive Arts Practice MA student has been collaborating with 8 research participants over 7 weeks to answer her research question ‘How should we interpret and curate the history of labelling people with learning difficulties (neurodiversity)?' During the event Freespace Gallery will be showcasing the artwork made collaboratively through the project.

There will also be an opportunity to take part in a creative activity.

Switching Perceptions is a new exhibition by artist Eleanor Minney in collaboration with Professor Liz Tunbridge and patients from the National Psychosis Unit at Bethlem Royal Hospital. In a new body of work spanning textiles, drawing, clay and handwriting, Minney untangles the fragile threads of the human mind through delicate, detailed explorations into what creates a sense of self, and the relationship to psychiatric conditions.

Studio Upstairs 30 Years Exhibition, Hackney – 13 December 2018

The exhibition will take place at Stour Space, Hackney on Thursday 13 December, 6.30pm. The charity Studio Upstairs was founded in 1988 to meet the needs of people moving out of the psychiatric health system, by providing a supportive community-based environment where members can communicate their experiences through making art. It is now celebrating its 30th year in London, has a branch in Bristol, and has recently opened in Croydon.

Bethlem Art Fair – until 21 December 2018

Bethlem Gallery’s 10th annual open exhibition will showcase work by over 80 artists connected to South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, featuring paintings, prints, drawings, ceramics, photographs, textiles, and sculpture for sale at affordable prices.

Music and Mind, Free Space Project – 30 November 2018

This evening event will feature a mix of European Classical and Indian music performed by celebrated tabla player, Kuljit Bhamra and the Alkyona String Quartet with readings of poetry, spoken word and scientific research interspersing the music by acclaimed actress Saskia Reeves.

House of Bread: Inside Bethlem Hospital – from 26 September 2018

In this solo show, artist-photographer Mark Neville documents the everyday life of Bethlem Royal Hospital, the oldest residential psychiatric treatment facility in the UK, during this 70th anniversary year of the NHS. Bethlem Museum of the Mind commissioned this project to explore the complex nature of mental illness, treatment and recovery.
