Tea Dance for Little People launches artist-led 'Play While You Wait' project

Following the successful pilot in November 2012, Social Enterprise ‘Tea Dance for Little People’ is working with St John’s Medical Centre in Lewisham to further develop its ‘Play While You Wait’ project. Funded by the Lewisham Central Ward Community First panel, it ran across the February half term and will continue to take place every Tuesday in February and March.

The project consists of a programme of artist-led and self-contained creative play experiences and activities designed to improve the atmosphere in waiting rooms for families and other patients. It also seeks to increase access for families to quality creative play, which can reduce the stress of family life and impact positively on children’s health and wellbeing now and later in life.

TDLP has worked with the staff at St John's to turn what can be a negative, stressful and fearful experience into a positive and enriching one; using tailored activities and experiences themed around the body, illness and the experience of being at the doctors, including songs, stories, music and movement sessions, visual art sessions and craft packs.

It is intended that the project be extended to other surgeries in the Lewisham Ward, pending a successful second grant from the Community First panel.
