Art and vascular dementia

A paper published in the Canadian Journal of Neurological Sciences, has examined the impact of vascular dementia on artists and non artists and assessed the role that artistic training may have on slowing the impact of cognitive impairment. The study by Dr. Luis Fornazzari, neurological consultant at St. Michael's Hospital's Memory Clinic focused on the artist Mary Hecht. Dr Fornazzari said: "Mary Hecht was a remarkable example of how artistic abilities are preserved in spite of the degeneration of the brain and a loss in the more mundane, day-to-day memory functions."
