Race equality in health commissioning

A new paper by the Race Equality Foundation has made a number of recommendations for improving healthcare commissioning aimed at tackling ethnic inequalities. The report calls for a strategic approach to health commissioning that actively targets race equality including using culturally appropriate activity.

The report notes that a lack of clear guidance on standards of service provision or appropriate commissioning and confusion between local and national priorities mean that minority ethnic communities are losing out when it comes to effective healthcare commissioning. It calls for improvements including strong leadership, a diverse workforce, effective partnerships, and meaningful engagement of local black and minority ethnic communities.
