Contemporary Painting: In Good Health, at Paintings in Hospitals – 13-17 June 2017

A new exhibition for Creativity and Wellbeing Week, at Paintings in Hospitals' Menier Gallery headquarters, bringing together artworks from PiH's unique collection with those by members of artist-led organisation Contemporary British Painting.

Featured artists include: Basil Beattie, Ian Davenport, Mary Webb, Carol Rhodes, Cathy Lomax, Pen Dalton, Matthew Krishanu and Mandy Payne. The exhibition will be hosted at the Menier Gallery during Creativity and Wellbeing Week 2017 (13-17 June).

Sadlers Wells Elixir Festival, London – 23-27 June 2017

Established in 2014, this dance festival celebrates lifelong creativity and the contribution of older artists, challenging assumptions about what older people can and want to do.

Successful trials begin to tackle loneliness

A trial, community-based programme from Age UK has met with significant success, with 88% of the participants experiencing a reduction in loneliness thanks to a mix of co-operative local networks and traditional befriending services. An independent report on the benefits of gardens and gardening on health has identified the important place gardening interventions have in the wider health and care system with a focus on four specific areas: social prescribing; community gardens; dementia care; end-of-life care.

Reading Well for young people

A reading list of 35 books selected by mental health experts and young people has been launched with the aim of supporting young people’s mental health. Part of the Reading Well Books on Prescription scheme the list aims to provide 13-18 year-olds with a wide range of self-help and information titles, as well as memoir, graphic novels and fiction.

World Happiness Report shows increasing inequality

The fourth annual report reviews the international state of happiness and seeks to show how a new science of happiness explains personal and national variations; the report notes that happiness inequality has increased significantly across the globe.

New figures show growth in happiness

The latest figures released by the Office of National Statistics in its measurement of people’s subjective wellbeing shows increased reporting of happiness and reductions in reports of anxiety.

The annual figures show a significant increase in the extent to which people consider what they do to be worthwhile along with a steady increase in happiness measures and a decrease over the past four years in the number of people reporting anxiety.
