RSPH Arts and Health Awards

The eighth annual Royal Society for Public Health Arts and Health Awards have been announced. The awards, celebrating good practice in work with ex-service personnel and their families went to organisations Home Front and Re-Live.

Commendations went to The Military Wives Choirs Foundation, Combat Stress, Wounded Warriors, Veterans in Practice and the Rosie Kay Dance Company.

Medicine Unboxed longlist

This year’s Medicine Unboxed Creative Prize panel has unveiled a longlist of ten artists for the prize.

All ten artists are working in the interface between medicine and the arts. The longlist will be whittled down to a shortlist later this month with the final winner being announced at the Medicine Unboxed weekend in November in Cheltenham.

The 8th annual RSPH Arts and Health Awards will focus on arts and health activities supporting Armed Forces and ex-Services Personnel and their Families.

Mental Health heroes

The Government has announced a call for nominations for a new scheme to raise awareness of the different ways people can support those experiencing mental ill health.

The initiative, entitled Mental Health Heroes is looking for people who are changing lives through one or more of the following:

HSJ Compassionate Care Award

The Health Service Journal Compassionate Care Award for 2014 has been awarded to Yorkshire based arts service Creative Minds.

Creative Minds is a framework of community organisations working with South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Trust to provide activities for service users. Judges praised “the empowerment of service users that demonstrates personal and economic benefits for individuals, families and whole communities”.

Medicine Unboxed Creative Prize

Poet Tiffany Atkinson has won the inaugural Medicine Unboxed Creative Prize worth £10,000.

Atkinson was previously winner of the Academi International Poetry Competition and her first collection 'Kink and Particle' was a Poetry Book Society Recommendation and winner of the Jerwood Aldeburgh First Collection Prize. Her winning entry responds to the experiences of patients and visitors in hospital. The other shortlisted artists were:

Building Better Healthcare Awards

The winners have been announced in this year’s Building Better Healthcare Awards. Lime Arts in Manchester won the award for best collaborative arts project while Hillingdon Hospitals won the award for best internal environment.


RSPH Awards

The 7th annual Royal Society of Public Health Arts and Health Awards have been announced with Islington’s Claremont Project winning the Project Award and Music for Life winning the Research Award.

The Awards recognise creative arts initiatives which impact on health and wellbeing and this year’s focus was on the value of creative arts for older people both in the community and health and social care settings.

LAHF plans for the future

We were pleased to receive the news last week that LAHF was to continue as part of the Arts Council’s national portfolio of arts organisations. This means that LAHF will continue to be funded by Arts Council England through to 2018. Our funding bid included plans to maintain our newsletter and advice and networking services as well as delivering Creativity and Wellbeing Week each year. We are also going to develop a number of new activities particularly looking at health inequalities and diversity in the field of arts in health.

West Midlands Arts and Health Awards

The West Midlands Arts, Health and Wellbeing (WMAHW) Arts and Health Awards 2014 are seeking nominations to recognise significant contributions to arts and health work across the West Midlands.
