Mike White

It is with great sadness that we share the news that Mike White died earlier this month. Mike was a key figure in developing, shaping and leading the field of arts in health over several decades. His book Arts Development in Community Health: A Social Tonic is perhaps the key text in capturing the value and virtue of the arts in generating good health and wellbeing. Based at the Centre for Medical Humanities in Durham, his work spanned academia, arts practice and community development. He was a key driver in the development of the National Alliance for Arts, Health and Wellbeing and was instrumental in developing research practices in arts in health. Mike described arts in health as a “small scale global phenomenon” and he was quick to join the dots between arts in health work in Britain and other related work internationally. His writing and leadership was a big influence on the development of arts in health practice beyond the UK. He will be missed.
