Creative approaches to teaching dance in community, educational and hospital settings – 11-12 March 2019

This two-day training event will provide key information and practical strategies on how to creatively engage young people with SEN, older adults, and those living with long-term health conditions.

Akademi delivers outreach work in a wide range of settings, including hospitals, day care centres, schools, care homes and community centres. Working as a dance artist in settings such as these requires varied approaches and specific skills.

Day one will include presentations and discussions focusing on older adults living with specific conditions such as dementia, respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. This will then be followed by a practical session, exploring ways in which we can engage those older adults with dance and movement.

Day two will consist of two talks looking at special educational needs (SEN) in young people and ways to plan and structure a dance workshop for an SEN school setting. Two practical sessions will focus on specific approaches to teaching for SEN, including communication and the incorporation of music and props. There will also be a session in which attendees can share and explore their ideas and practices and apply these to given scenarios.

In addition, there will also be an opportunity to arrange observations of Dance Well workshops in hospitals and community settings. This will allow you to learn from shadowing experienced artists and to gain a deeper insight into how Akademi runs its outreach programmes.
