Arts Council promotes role of arts in health

Arts Council England has published a new document outlining the benefits of the arts. Create: A journal of perspectives on the value of art and culture includes an essay by John Ashton, President of the Faculty of Public Health who argues that wellbeing and the arts are inextricably linked.

His essay is a strong argument for the impact of the arts on health and wellbeing and for the value of participatory arts. The essay is accompanied by others by leading economists and artists and former Prime Minister John Major. A survey to accompany the publication found that two thirds (64%) of adults think the arts can improve people’s overall sense of wellbeing and three in five adults (60%) saying that having more arts and culture in their local area would make it a better place to live.
